Helping Fathers Support Mothers and Babies

Fatherhood and Being a Supportive Partner

During the nine months a woman is pregnant, her life will go through major changes. While her body is changing to provide a safe home for the life growing inside her womb, she is going to need daily support on this journey. That is where you come in, by being an involved father to your baby while they are still growing.

The Importance of a Father’s Support

Women are not the only ones whose lives are impacted by pregnancy. You play an important role in the baby’s life, even while they are still developing in the womb. Studies show that when an expecting woman has the support of the father, even if that father does not live with her, factors like low birth weight and premature birth decrease. The emotional and financial support you provide reduces stress on a woman, helping her give birth to a healthy baby.

How Fathers Can Help

There are many roles that you play in your child’s life. Your first role starts with supporting the woman who is carrying your child! Changing your eating and social habits to healthier ones model those behaviors for the mother-to-be, supporting the healthy changes she needs to make. If those habits involve drug use or smoking, helping her kick the habit will improve the chances of birthing a healthy baby. The more involvement a father has in supporting the expecting mother, the better the chances for having a healthy baby.

Get Fathers Involved!

During pregnancy, families, friends, and health care providers are focused on helping the expecting woman with her pregnancy. This is understandable, but leaves another important person in the baby’s life less prepared: you! Many fathers rely on second hand information to learn what is happening and how the pregnancy is going. You should be part of parenting classes and visits to healthcare providers. The more you are involved with the support of the developing baby, the more your baby’s life improves!
